The title of "king" lost favor,

resulting in a plethora of new titles for people who are understood to be allowed to tell other people what to do or think or say. There is a German word for these kinds of roles: weisungsberechtigt. It seems that these titles are often chosen and massaged, to avoid the kingly connotations.
( The idea that kings are still around, but we call them different, I think I got from Dubrovsky and Graeber, in their fun book on kings. )
